Ventura County Foster Parent Association

We are different from other organizations in the community because while we are all volunteers, we are also Foster Parents, Relative Care Providers, Advocates, Attorneys, Doctors and other professionals who have years of experience to rely upon to support you.  We don't require a referral from anyone to help you and most importantly we have walked the path you are living.

Rachael's Closet Program of the Ventura County Foster Parent AssociationRachael’s Closet is an all-volunteer program funded and administered by the Ventura County Foster Parent Association. Any donations of goods or funds are a tax-deductible donation under IRS requirements.

Rachael’s Closet was created in 2011 based on the recognition that everyone needs help!  Caring for children in out-of-home placement, being a child who is in care, or being a biological parent that has worked hard to regain custody of your children isn’t the easiest thing to do.  We know that sometimes a simple offer of help can change the course of events for the better and make all the difference in the world.

We are different from other organizations in the community because while we are all volunteers, we are also Foster Parents, Relative Care Providers, Advocates, Attorneys, Doctors and other professionals who have years of experience to reply upon to support you.  We don’t just offer clothes or “things” you might need, we offer our fellowship, support, and mentorship to help you make your life easier.  Our team of volunteers, led by Lisa Pugh, are there for you when you need it. Best of all - we help you with no strings attached. We don't require a referral, we are not directly affiliated or managed by any county or state agencies, our services are free and confidential and support all members of community equally - regardless of age, gender, sexual identity, or faith.

Our services are all free of charge but are intended for care providers, kinship providers, biological parents, and foster parents who have a valid placement of one or more children currently in their care who are under court-ordered jurisdiction (an open case), including Family Maintenance.   Unfortunately, we don’t have means to help you with your biological children, children who are in pre- or post-adoptive status or children “that you might know” who are with other care providers.  In all instances, anyone requesting support should be prepared to provide valid placement papers for any children for which they are acquiring good or services. This enables us to support our entire community equally.

So how can we help you make a difference?

We can help provide a safe environment for you to meet your children’s biological family . As a foster family or resource provider helping reunite the children in your care is important and to do that you need to interact and get to know each other.
We can help with requesting services, filling out forms, and even give you a place to have a cup of coffee and relax. All you have to do is stop in and ask. We’ll never rush you out and we are dedicated to helping you be successful.
So that every child can have something of their very own.
We can help fill the gap with children that were unexpectedly placed in your care. Our team can help you with items from infants to teens including shoes, personal items and even books.
To enable you to help you take an extra child or keep that sibling set together.
For children and young adults who were just placed into care or recently had a change in placement and came with nothing more than the clothes on their back. Our bag will help you get through the first few days without having to rush out to the store at 10pm to buy bucket load of things before you’ve had a chance to assess the situation. Our bags are packed with love and are appropriate to the age and gender of the child

So How Do You Access Our Services?

First, you should know that we don't publish the address of Rachael's Closet for a reason.  Primarily because we view Rachael's Closet as a safe space for people to come and get the support they need.  In a lot of cases this means bringing children who are in care into our facility - many of whom have experienced severe trauma - and sometime needs a little "extra space" to feel comfortable.

Secondly, to keep our facility comfortable and welcoming for the children and families that visit us, we ask that you please contact us to make and appointment for anything you need.  This also allows us to know how much time you might need to get the help you are requesting, make sure that we have the services or items you are seeking and most importantly that we can make sure the right people are there to support you.

Next, as we stated earlier, we do not require a referral from a social worker or agency to use our services.  We believe that you know what you need more than anyone else and having to justify a need for something you require in most cases just introduces unnecessary delay.

Lastly - if you do not currently have a child in your placement (you are getting licensed/certified, you "might" be getting a placement but your not sure) and you are seeking goods (cribs, car seats, strollers, etc...) please be courteous and conscious of  the needs of the rest of our community and know that there is only so much to go around and someone with a current placement might have a more immediate need.

If you are in a situation that requires immediate support (short notice placement, issues with your children in your care, etc..) please contact us via phone at 805.285.3790 and we will make any necessary arrangement to help you as best we can day or night.  We are prepared for these situations and have volunteers at various locations throughout Ventura County who can normally respond quickly when needed.

So feel free to make an appointment to visit us today!
